Charles Gomez & Co’s Consultant Corporate Finance Barrister James Oton has achieved the Professional Diploma of Competence in Gibraltar Financial Services.
The cross-sector award is a local industry standard and is the first of its kind, focussing on Gibraltar practises, procedures, and law.
The award is a collaboration between the University of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission and requires a holistic understanding of the financial landscape in Gibraltar.
Director of Professional Development and Continuing Education at the University of Gibraltar said:
“We wanted to pioneer a professional qualification within Financial Services where regulator and industry, through the professional body associations, could make a real contribution to the development of a qualification by bringing their technical and practical knowledge and expertise into the classroom […] This Diploma ensures that there is cohesiveness in terms of best practice, procedures, dialogue, terminology and understanding between sectors.”
Speaking on the course, James Oton said:
“In legal practise, there is no better training than that which is achieved on the job dealing with cases. As lawyers, we are all accustomed to conducting legal research and in the field of financial services; cross-referring with the legislation and case law in respect of companies, regulation, trusts, liquidations, funds, insurance and distributed ledger technology.”
“However, the course leading up to the Diploma of Competence in Financial Services is a useful resource in terms of ongoing professional development which has moreover allowed me to exchange views with the lecturers and other attendees.”
“I would encourage anyone currently working in the financial services industry to undertake this course if they are seeking to expand their knowledge due to the exhaustive content, but also from a practical perspective. Having recently successfully completed the course I am already putting what I have learnt into practice.”
